Growers will be selling British cauliflowers this winter thanks to the ideal weather conditions in the coastal areas of Cornwall.

Grown against the most picturesque backdrop on Cornish cliffs, growers have found that by planting the UK’s most popular veg as closely to the coast as possible, it allows the sea to warm the air and ensure the cauliflowers don’t encounter frost damage.

In summer, cauliflowers usually take 16 weeks to grow, however during the frostier months, the veg needs up to 40 weeks to reach its peak quality and ensure growers harvest the best quality heads.

The scenic growing methods enable the growers to supply quality British cauliflowers all year round, even throughout the frosty winter months when cauliflower is typically sourced from Spain.

Listed in the nation’s top 25 favourite fruit and veg, retailer Asda has seen the demand for cauliflowers increase as more Brits consider it as a go-to, low-carb alternative.

This year, Asda has predicted the sale of almost 9.5 million cauliflowers – 3.8% more heads than 2016.

Tom Simmons, cauliflower grower, comments: “Cornwall offers us the ideal growing location for caulis, as the proximity to the coast means we can produce better quality veg, unblemished by frost that hits the rest of the nation’s growing areas.

“With the demand for quality caulis year-round growing, the cliffs of Hayle are the perfect growing location because of the optimum weather patterns the location offers. We’re now harvesting around half a million of them each week, ensuring the nation has British-grown, high quality, flavoursome cauliflowers for any meal throughout winter.”
