More than 50 sheep and lambs were killed in an accidental fire at Scottish farm.

Dozens of orphan lambs in pens and 13 ewes died in the fire, while a nearby herd of cattle escaped the flames.

A fire spokeswoman said: “This fire has been deemed accidental.”

Around 40 firefighters from across the North-east of Scotland tackled the accidental blaze in farm buildings in Aberdeenshire.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was called to the incident at Blackpots Farm, near Auchnagatt, shortly after 7pm on Sunday night (30 April).

Firefighters were originally called to deal with what was believed to be a shed fire but found several agricultural buildings ablaze, including one that was filled with straw – which took crews around five hours to bring under control.

White smoke could be seen billowing into the sky for miles around in the countryside as the fire raged.
