An intruder chopped a heavily pregnant sheep's legs off and skinned the remains after breaking into a Northern Ireland farm.

The incident happened in the early hours of Sunday (30 September), according to farmer Arron Lamont, who has now made a public appeal on social media.

He found the pedigree Dorset ewe with its throat slit, all four legs chopped off and fleece skinned.

Police have been out to investigate, and the farmer has resorted to social media for more help.

His public post, which has been shared over 1,000 times, says: “How anyone could do this to an animal is beyond me.

“Someone knew what they were doing as this wasn’t a five-minute job. Wasn’t a pretty sight to come across this morning.

“Wire in field has been broken and all other ewes now badly shook up.”

It follows news of Surrey councillors pinpointing similar incidents to criminals supplying cheap meat on the underground market.

Enquiries are ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact officers in Limavady on 101, quoting reference 510 of 30/09/18.
