The Lakes Free Range Egg Company was recognised at a multi-business award event, held at the Low Wood Hotel on the shores of Windermere in the Lake District.

The team won the Agribusiness Award at a ceremony attended by Margot James MP and Minister for Small Business, Consumers and Corporate Responsibility, and guest speaker BBC Presenter Louise Minchin

The CN Group Business Awards celebrates the successes of businesses right across Cumbria, recognising the diversity of industries from farming and tourism to nuclear energy. They were also looking for individuals and companies that could be role models in the county.

The business model adopted by The Lakes Free Range Egg Company focuses on long term sustainability – excellence in animal welfare, strong environmental provenance and support for producers who live on family farms.

Commenting on the Agribusiness of the Year Award, compere Adam Powell from BBC Radio said: “The judges felt that The Lakes Free Range Egg Company was head and shoulders above the rest, with a really strong sustainable provenance.

“The passion for what they do is also evident in the way they look after all their customers, from market leaders like McDonald’s, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Co-op to regional specialists like Booths and local independent retailers like Cranstons.”

David and Helen Brass, owners of The Lakes Free Range Egg Company, received the award from Armstrong Watson partner and Head of Agriculture. Sponsoring the award, Andrew said: “It is great to see such a successful business win the award especially as they place a great importance on supporting their producers many of whom are Cumbrian farming businesses.

Summing up, David and Helen Brass said: “Winning this award is really a thank you to the whole team working to supply eggs to our customers; that includes our farm staff, the producers we work with, the factory team who monitor and pack the eggs and the drivers who deliver.

“It’s almost twenty years since our business began, and as Louise Minchin suggested in her speech, it’s about daring to have a go and doing something you really enjoy.”
