McCormick dealers PGF Agri and HJR Agri put on a great demo of tractors working with Lely at the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society's grassland event.

The headline picture shows a 188/218hp McCormick X70.70 - one of last 'Doncaster' tractors - and a 165/175hp X7.660 Pro Drive Premium working in harmony chopping forage into a pick-up wagon. Just a handful of ex-hire/demo unit McCormick X70 tractors are available from dealers with listings on the www.McCormickTrader.com website.

Two examples of the X7 Pro Drive tractors from the top end of the McCormick range were in action, one powering a trailed forage harvester, a second driving a silage baler and equipped with a McCormick MPower 120 loader.

The X7 Pro Drive range starts with the four-cylinder X7.440 with 135hp generated at rated speed climbing to 143hp as revs are pulled down under load and stretches to the six-cylinder X7.680 with up to 188hp for draft work and 212hp for pto and transport applications.

All are equipped with a ZF semi-powershift transmission giving four powershifts in each of six ranges, with a creep option available. Load-sensing hydraulics with electric spool valves operated from a seat-mounted console are also part of the standard specification.

The McCormick X6 Series was represented at the event by a 121/133hp X6.430LS operating a big trailed tedder. This range starts at 111hp and peaks at 140hp with the 'power plus' feature of the X6.440 available for transport work and pto-driven implements.

There is a choice of 'standard' and 'LS' specifications - the latter has load-sensing piston pump hydraulics in place of a gear pump, larger tyres as standard and a choice of regular 40kph, eco 40kph and 50kph gearing. The 'LS' models can also have front axle suspension in addition to the cab suspension option that is available on all models.

A 105/113hp McCormick X5.40 with MClassic loader represented the X5 Series, which starts at 85hp and comes with a choice of synchro shuttle and power shuttle transmissions in various configurations from a simple 12x12 to a 48-speed unit with creep and three-speed power shuttle.

A new cab and increased hydraulic oil flow are among upgrades on the latest version.
