The manufacturer of a new vaccine says it will offer longer and better protection against both salmonella enteritidis and salmonella typhimurium.

IDT Biologika launched the new vaccine during the Pig and Poultry Fair at Stoneleigh in May.

The company claims that the vaccine offers earlier protection to young birds, that it protects the birds for longer than existing vaccines and that the protection is broader – protecting against both enteritidis and typhimurium and different phages.

Hysolv Animal Health will be marketing the vaccine in the UK and Ireland. The UK launch marks the beginning of a series of Europe-wide launches.

The live vaccine is given orally through the water supply in a three-dose regime.

It also protects against other SE strains and the newly-emerging monophasic Salmonella Typhimurium strains.

An advantage for farmers is that the vaccine strain is robust and can survive in more hostile conditions.

Dr Daniel Windhorst, salmonella vaccine specialist with IDT Biologika, spoke to FarmingUK TV about the new vaccine.

He said the vaccine, Salmovac 440, which would be available from the end of May in the United Kingdom, would be comparable on cost with existing ones, although it would provide layers with improved protection.

"The idea is to offer the customer a product which for basically the same price gives them a better protection. That makes it an easy decision for them to go for this vaccine."
