No compromise on TB eradication - NFU

NFU Cymru has today said that the description by some commentators that there is to be a ’scale-back’ in the WAG eradication strategy following a decision to accept guidance from the Court of Appeal is a mis-representation of the position.

Stephen James, Deputy President of NFU Cymru said, "Whilst one of the Appeal Judges has raised concern that there is a technical inconsistency between the TB Eradication Order, which relates to the whole of Wales and the Intensive Action Pilot Area which is confined to West Wales, it was never intended that the despatch of badgers, which is only a part of the Eradication Programme involving a holistic approach to the disease in cattle and badgers, would take place outside of the Intensive Action Pilot Area.

"In practical terms, satisfying the Court’s concerns on this particular point in no way comprises the eradication strategy in the Intensive Action Pilot Area. I remain hopeful that the Court’s judgement, due next week, on the original grounds of appeal will allow the Welsh Assembly Government to continue with its multifaceted programme of measures to eradicate this pernicious disease."
