The online livestock marketplace SellMyLivestock has recorded it's best ever January for all classes of livestock.

Now in its fourth year of trading, the site was up 153% compared to January 2016, with over 300 lots presented for sale in this traditionally quiet month.

Andrew Loftus, a director of the firm, commented: "We expected store sales to pick up nicely in January, but what took us by surprise was the strong demand for both breeding cows and breeding sheep within the month.

"We sold 621 breeding cows and over 2,000 breeding sheep in January. We recorded just over 1,000 strong store cattle and 56 pedigree breeding bulls, with particularly strong showings of Limousin, Angus and Shorthorn bulls."

SellMyLivestock is the UK's largest online marketplace for beef and sheep, with almost 20,000 UK farmers registered to trade.

Along with it’s sister marketplace, Graindex.com, which trades combinable crops direct from farm, it is owned by Hampshire-based Hectare Agritech Ltd.

The site is quick and simple to use, and charges no commission.

A basic listing is free, with upgrades available to those who want to use more features and reach an even wider audience.
