Lincolnshire Police and Fire and Rescue are investigating the cause of a fire which ripped through an abattoir on Heath Road in Skegness, Lincolnshire.

Around thirty firefighters attended the blaze at the slaughterhouse and meat processing plant on Friday night (24 February).

Firefighters scambled onto two extendable platforms and directed water at high pressure over the building in Heath Road.

Residents in the surrounding areas were advised to keep their windows and doors shut due to toxic smoke.

Resident Nicky Watton posted on Facebook: "Major fire on industrial estate, looks like the slaughter house, be careful if you're going down wainfleet road can barely see anything!!!"

The family-owned abattoir, which as strong ties to the local farming community, is operated by J&D Haworth as Yorkshire Country Meats. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Police are appealing for any witnesses who saw suspicious activity in the area to contact Skegness CID by calling 101 and quoting incident number 409 of February 25.
