A sheep has died in Wales after it was shot "with nails", according to South Wales Police.

A spokeswoman for South Wales Police said the force did not know exactly when the incident happened, but that the sheep was found dead on a mountainside in Hirwaun in the Cynon Valley on Monday (16 October).

The animal was reportedly found by the farmer from the nearby Gellidafolog Farm.

Now officers in the Rhondda Cynon Taf area are looking for anyone with any information to come forward, and put out an appeal on Thursday (19 October).

The SW Police North Twitter account’s post said: "A sheep has died after being shot with nails in #Hirwaun if you have info please call 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 occ1700402789."

The RSPCA Cymru has said it “sounded like a deeply harrowing incident”.

A spokesman for RSPCA Cymru added: “We’d urge anyone with information to respond to South Wales Police’s appeal.
