A graphic image shows six pregnant ewes lying dead after they were attacked by a dog which ran loose in a Gloucestershire field.

The sheep were found in a Hartpury College farm between 4.20pm and 5.40pm yesterday (23 March).

When they were found four of the ewes were already dead. Farmers had to shoot one of the ewes because it had been so badly attacked, and another died later.

Each ewe was carrying two lambs which also died following the attack. The attack will cost Hartpury College an estimated £1,500.

Andrew Eastabrook, the college's farm manager, said he was disappointed the dog owner did not come forward and the ewes were left for the farmers to find.

He told Gloucetsershire Live: "We're pretty gutted. It would be nice to think someone would have the courage to hold their hands up. For someone to walk off and leave them is unforgiveable."

It is the second time in a year that a dog has attacked sheep in Hartpury College's grounds.

Around 12 months ago a dog escaped onto a field and chased 16 ewes into a lake where they drowned.
