Leading rural insurer NFU Mutual has said they estimate the damage from Storm Doris will lead to more than 1,000 claims across the UK.

NFU Mutual, which insures over 75% of UK farmers and thousands of rural homes and businesses, is already dealing with claims for damaged farm buildings, homes and vehicles following the wrath of Storm Doris.

“Based on what we are hearing from our network of offices across the UK, the worst damage is across the Midlands, North Wales, Northern England and Scotland,” said NFU Mutual Rural Affairs Specialist, Tim Price.

“It’s too early accurately predict the full extent of the damage – but from what we have heard from our claims staff we estimate that Storm Doris could lead to more than 1,000 claims.

Damage to roofs

Mr Price continued: “Claims reported so far include a roof torn off a large sheep shed, together with many reports of damage to the roofs of homes and commercial buildings along with property and vehicle damage caused by fallen trees.

“Staff at our 300-strong network of local offices are already helping policyholders who have suffered damage to their property and we are able to make emergency payments of £500 or more if people are unable to remain in their homes or need to organise emergency repairs.

“Having a local presence means we’ve been able to react quickly and provide immediate assistance to families and businesses in the areas worst affected by Storm Doris.”

Storm Doris saw strong winds across the UK, with isolated gusts of up to 80mph in northern England and Wales.

Central England and Wales had heavy rain in addition to winds of 50-60mph, while Scotland saw snow and the far north of England.
