Targeted research to create a more competitive industry is vital for the long-term future of British pig producers and a review into priorities is already delivering results. The review, commissioned by the British Pig Executive (BPEX) in collaboration with Defra, is being undertaken by consultant David Thelwall to identify research priorities over the next five to 10 years. He undertook an extensive consultation with people from across the industry and along the supply chain, including leading researchers and academics.
The main points now under consideration are:
What scientific resources are needed to address the high priority pig sector goals.
What proportion of the industry could use the results and what proportion would actually do so.
A comparison of the cost benefit of each area of research. BPEX Chief Executive Mick Sloyan said: "David Thelwall has consulted people from across the industry which has really helped focus on the key priority areas for research over the next five to 10 years. "This work will now be refined in consultation with the industry over next three months. Everybody has a part to play and a contribution to make to this fundamental review which is crucial to the delivery of the Road to Recovery strategy and comments on the report will be more than welcome." The final report will go to the May meeting of BPEX. It is anticipated the review will be completed by September.
