Criminals have stolen more than 200 piglets from a farm in the space of a month, according to the police.

Police are investigating the series of thefts from a pig farm in the small village of Wigsley near Newton on Trent on the Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire border.

An appeal has been made for anyone with information over the incidents to come forward.

A spokesman for the force said: "Officers are currently investigating a report of stolen piglets from a farm in Newark.

"Over 200 piglets are believed to have been stolen over the past month."

According to the NFU Mutual Rural Crime Report 2016, livestock rustling remains a huge problem, with costs stubbornly high in Northern Ireland and the North East and South West of England.

At a total cost to the UK of £2.9 million, 70 per cent came from these three regions alone.

A new initiative has been launched to fight the 'rising tide' of livestock thefts.
