Trials show benefits of pyroxsulam

Dow AgroSciences pyroxsulam-based herbicides are effectively controlling volunteer oats in winter wheat, trials and grower feedback has shown.

For growers who are facing the challenge of blackgrass the ideal product to use is either GF-2070 or Broadway Sunrise, according to Dow AgroSciences’ cereal herbicide specialist Stuart Jackson.

Approved in 2011, GF-2070 contains the unique Dow AgroSciences molecule pyroxsulam plus flupyrsulfuron-methyl to deliver effective control of blackgrass in winter wheat.

The product was formulated specifically to meet the challenges of blackgrass control with the added benefits of controlling a wide range of grass and broad-leaved weed, plus rotational flexibility.

"If there are bromes present in winter wheat, Broadway Star is the one to use," says Mr Jackson." All three products also offer control of ryegrass."

According to trials at Wellesbourne in Warwickshire, applications should be made when the tame oats are actively growing up to a maximum growth stage of mid-tillering (GS24).

NIAB TAG Northamptonshire-based agronomist Jon Bellamy says: "The Wellesbourne tame oats trial was good to see and showed the optimum control came from the use of a pre-em like Crystal, followed up by pyroxsulam – and it’s useful that GF-2070 has other benefits too.

"I use Broadway Star for bromes and that is a brilliant product. Its broad-leaved weed control is fantastic."

The trials demonstrated that a programmed approach and careful timing are crucial for best effects on any of the main grass weeds, including blackgrass, ryegrasses, wild oats and bromes.
