A Welsh farming union is asking for applicants for a new intake of enthusiastic young farmers to be part of its Next Generation Policy Group.

Farmers, aged 40 and under, from all sectors and all counties of Wales are invited to apply to join the NFU Cymru group and to represent the future of the industry.

The young farmers will have a chance to work on issues such as Brexit and rural development, and will have the chance to travel to meet government at all levels, including in Westminster.

This will be the second intake for the group, which has a two-year term.

It is seen as providing future generation to engage with top decision makers, as well as the opportunity to meet similar groups in Ireland and England.

'Conversation at all levels'

Member of the current group, Annie James, said the young generation need to be part of the conversation at all levels of the industry.

“This group not only enables this, but can lead to integration into other policy groups and boards and will help develop and filter informed younger generation farmers into the union’s wider work and wider industry posts,” Ms James explained.

“I think this is particularly important in the light of Brexit but also to help keep the work that NFU Cymru does relevant for the future generations of farmers.”

'Impact the next generation'

NFU Cymru President John Davies said the union is committed to working with the younger members of the industry.

Mr Davies said: “The Next Generation Policy Group has been a great working group for ideas on the future of the industry. Brexit is a key issue at the moment, and will significantly impact the next generation within the industry.

“Being part of NFU Cymru’s Next Generation Policy Group is a great opportunity to get your voice heard. We at NFU Cymru are keen to get younger members involved in the Union, and if you are interested please complete an application.”

If you are interested in applying please complete the application form on the NFU Cymru website. The deadline for applications closes on 28th February 2018.
