Retailer Waitrose has won an award for animal welfare, winning the Europe wide Compassion in World Farming 'Best Retailer Award’ 2017.

The supermarket has released a set of photographs showcasing a variety of its animals and farmers as a way of celebrating the award.

The Compassion in World Farming (CIWF) Good Farm Animal Welfare Awards recognise and reward producers, manufacturers and retailers across the world for working in a "sustainable and responsible" way.

Waitrose Agriculture Director Heather Jenkins said: “This award is an extraordinary and powerful testament to the commitment of many colleagues, our farmers and our supply chain partners.

“It demonstrates the strength of collaborative working to ensure our high standards of animal welfare are maintained.

“We are absolutely delighted that these efforts have been recognised and proud to be able to share some beautiful photographs of those at the heart of this win - our animals and our farmers.”

In March, Waitrose extended its grazing pledge for its dairy cows as the supermarket exceeded its own target for outdoor grazing, achieving an average of 167 days last season.
