European young farmers have been urged to take major survey on the future of the sector

CEJA, the voice of Europe’s 2 million young farmers, is conducting a major survey to gather young farmers' views on the future of the sector.

The 20-question survey by the European Council of Young Farmers (CEJA) covers issues such as business viability, environmental sustainability, lifestyles in rural communities and investment in animal welfare.

The survey is open to all young farmers of the 28 EU countries and aims to understand their needs in order to implement a more sustainable agricultural sector and see how they look at their future.

Looking at the discussion on the next CAP and the key theme of Generational Renewal in the future proposals of the European Commission, this survey and its results will provide an added value to the debate with updated figures about young farmers.

The results will be presented in a final report in September 2017 during an event in the European Parliament, where EU institutions and all major stakeholders will be present.

Speaking on the launch, CEJA President Alan Jagoe stressed: “Without the input of young farmers in their future I don’t see how policymakers can make the informed decisions we need to see at the European stage. We as CEJA are happy to partner with DeLaval to support further research into the sector.”

CEJA has previously warned EU politicians about climate change. In a meeting, the pan-EU organisation said that “unless farmers are profitable and resilient, we don’t need to talk about what they can do to help in the future, because farmers simply won’t be there.”
