A young man has been seriously hurt in a farm accident in Cambridgeshire, prompting an emergency helicopter to take him to hospital.

Medics from the Cambridge-based Magpas Air Ambulance flew to the aid of the young man, who was injured in an incident involving farm machinery.

It is reported that the incident was a "very serious" one.

A Magpas spokeswoman said: "At 8.59am on September 20 Magpas doctor Vijayasankar and paramedic Alex Pearce landed in a rural location south of Papworth Everard via the Magpas Air Ambulance.

"They had been called to treat a man who had been injured in an incident involving farming machinery.

"The Magpas enhanced medical team assessed the patient (in his 20s) who had sustained a serious leg injury.

"They administered advanced pain relief at the scene, providing him with A&E level care, and accompanied him to Addenbrooke’s Hospital via land ambulance.

"The man was in a very serious but stable condition upon arrival.

"An EEAST Ambulance Service paramedic crew and Cambridgeshire police were also in attendance."

Dangerous industry

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have announced their latest annual fatal injuries in agriculture report for Great Britain 2016/2017.

Last year, 30 people were killed in agriculture, compared with 29 the year before.

And despite over half of all fatal injuries occurring with older farmers over the age of 65, the fact remains that farm workers of any age run the risk of injury or death.
