A Cambridgeshire farmer has been left devastated after a barn fire destroyed all the farm's hay and straw supplies.

On Monday (December 10) at 9.29pm, crews were called to the barn fire on Lowndes Drove, Needingworth.

Firefighters arrived to find the barn containing 500 tonnes of straw well alight.

James Anderson, 50, who is the farmer of Priory Farm, said he is 'shook up' after the incident.

He told Cambridgshire Live: “I’m pretty shook up really. We lost all our hay and straw. We’ve got beef cattle here, and it’s just at the start of winter, so I’m just wondering how we’re going to cope, really.

“We don’t know how it started. There were two separate fires. One either end of the farm.

“It’s come at the worst time of year. But we’ll manage.”

Crews from across Cambridgeshire have been in attendance overnight. The water carrier and welfare unit have also been in attendance.

Working in sections, firefighters used two hose reels and a jet to get the fire under control and protect nearby buildings.

The crews have now scaled down, and one fire engine is in attendance.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

A fundraiser has started to help Mr Anderson following the incident.
