Grassland & Muck, the triennial event organised by the Royal Agricultural Society of England, returned to Stoneleigh, Warwickshire on 24-25 May 2017.

Displaying an impressive collection of machinery, live demonstrations and grass plots, along with timely advice and technical forums, the two-day 190 acre event had something for every grassland farmer.

FarmingUK spoke to Rothamsted Research, who study the processes that underpin agricultural systems.

It is research which is used to direct the sustainable intensification of future farming systems and help farmers to achieve more from less.

The app Rothamsted brought along with them to Grassland & Muck is developed by the SWARM Knowledge Hub in collaboration with Rothamsted Research North Wyke. It allows the farming community to appreciate the nutritive and economic value of livestock manures.

Farmers are able to visually assess manures and slurry application rates and calculate what is being provided in terms of available nutrients as well as giving an estimate of potential savings in artificial fertilisers.
