Sheer determination and a commitment to training have prompted an award nomination for the head of the team developing Cornwall’s £1.5 billion agricultural, horticultural, food and land-based sector.

Cornwall Enterprise’s David Rodda has been named as one of three finalists in contention for an Individual Achievement Award at Cornwall College Business’ Excellence in Business Training Awards.

Since 2000, David has led the Cornwall Agri-Food Council’s Development Team, which played an integral role in delivering Objective One funding for the county’s rural sector, and is now involved in the new Rural Development Programme.

Despite the massive commitment needed to work and study in tandem, David chose to further his knowledge by undertaking a Masters degree in Rural Development from the University of Plymouth, while continuing with his busy, high-profile post.

He explains: "I was able to focus on subjects that were relevant to my work, and it has really broadened my awareness of economic development issues in rural areas. I feel the course has really enhanced my performance and has provided me with a new perspective on the work of my team.

"I could not have achieved my Masters without the support of Cornwall Enterprise, the Cornwall Agri-food Council, the Objective One EAGGF Programme and, of course, my family. I owe them all a huge vote of thanks"

David’s honed skills have brought a new dimension to an already successful team. A recent investigation into the impact of European investment found that Cornwall’s agri-food industry grew by an impressive 50 per cent from £1.0 billion to £1.5 billion between 2003 and 2006 alone.

Cornwall Enterprise managing director John Berry says: "We won’t find out for another six weeks whether David has won this Award, but ultimately the winner will be Cornish agriculture, horticulture and the wider land-based sector.

"Over recent years, David and his team have made a significant – and positive – impact on Cornwall’s food industry.

"Throughout this time, David’s commitment to professional development has been a very important quality. We wish him the very best of luck at the awards."
