2012 UK harvest results in poor quality wheat crop

The UK harvest of 2012 resulted in a low yielding and extremely poor quality wheat crop, comments Gleadell Agriculture’s managing director David Sheppard.

Whilst domestic compounders consumers have been able to deal with wheat down to 65kg/hl, there is still a significant amount of wheat that tests below that level.

"With milling/biscuit wheat imports expected to reach well in excess of 2 mln mt, finding a market for between 500,000mt and 1 mln mt of low quality feed wheat probably represents the most significant challenge for the second half of this marketing year."

"Gleadell’s export programme is making a significant dent in this tonnage in the post-harvest period from September up to Christmas."

"The latest stages of this campaign has seen the MV Armia Ludowa loaded with 27,500 mt in Immingham, MV Maraki loaded with 22,000 mt in Great Yarmouth and, smaller but still significant, tonnages of feed wheat exported from Dover, Southampton and Avonmouth."

“All this is being achieved with the significant assistance of our shareholders, Toepfer International and InVivo," adds Sheppard.
