ASDA stores are set to become the latest supermarkets to stock wildlife-friendly milk. Thousands of bottles of 'White & Wild' milk will hit the supermarket's shelves in the next few weeks. The innovative scheme means ASDA customers will be able to help the environment, whilst supporting local dairy farmers.
Two pence from every litre of 'White & Wild' milk sold at ASDA will be donated to The Wildlife Trusts. In addition, three pence will be paid to participating dairy farmers who have signed up to a bio-diversity plan to encourage wildlife back onto their farms.
Della Myers, ASDA's Dairy Manager, whilst on a visit to Killoch Farm near Mauchline, said: "The work that has been carried out here to encourage wildlife back onto farms demonstrates how much can be achieved.
"We are determined to play our part in this initiative by promoting 'White & Wild' milk in our stores. This will enable our customers to make a valuable contribution to The Wildlife Trusts whilst supporting local farmers."
David Shaw, Managing Director of Sorn Milk, and Cathy Jamieson, Member of Scottish Parliment for Carrick, Cumnock and Doon Valley, gave Della a guided tour of Killoch Farm to show her bird boxes that have recently been installed as a direct result of sales of White & Wild milk.
Cathy said: "ASDA's participation in this unique initiative in my constituency is fantastic news for local dairy farmers. I welcome their support and hope that by working together we can encourage even more wildlife to return to these farms."
In addition to providing boxes, the scheme also insists that ten percent of a participating farmer's land is brought under habitat management.
