ASDA stores across the country are taking delivery of thousands more home grown poinsettias this week, the nation's favourite festive plant, in time for the Christmas rush.
The British grown poinsettia, which is hardier than its Dutch relative, has proved such a hit that ASDA has had to order nearly 50% more from British growers this year to cope with customer demand. However, while ASDA's support for British growers remains resolute, other leading retailers have once again chosen to import poinsettias from abroad.
Although poinsettias are native to Mexico they are grown for ASDA in special climate controlled greenhouses throughout England (Macclesfield, Clacton-on-Sea and Nazing near Harlow).
Jill Skipsey, plant buyer at ASDA said: "The arrival of red poinsettias in our stores really signals the start of the festive season. And they are proving so popular with our customers we have had to order 50% more this year to keep up with demand. However unlike our competitors - all of our poinsettias are 100% British!"
British red poinsettias are priced at £2.78 and are available in all ASDA stores from today.
