Auctioneers Halls reported an excellent entry in terms of numbers and quality at the second annual sale of suckled calves and weanlings at Bishops Castle Auction on November 18, with prices having risen slightly in the last month.
Prior to the start of the sale, the Jack Bedell Cup was presented to joint winners Messrs M. and A. Powell of Kerry and Messrs J. A. Wood and Sons of Kinnerton by Simon Bedell. The cup is awarded to the highest priced pen of four or more cattle at the Bishops Cattle and District Quality Cattle Sale of autumn and spring born calves.
Overall steers averaged 187p per kilo and £635 per head with highs of £860 for a bunch of eight, 460 kilo Limousins from J. G. and S. E. Robinson, Cefn Du and 235p per kilo for eight, 270 kilo British Blues from J. A. Wood and Sons, Kinnerton.
Heifers averaged 177p per kilo and £545 per head to a maximum of £730 for a 440 kilo Limousin from P. and A. W. Unwin, Upper Stedment and 230p per kilo for four, 280 kilo Limousins from J. A. Wood and Sons.
There was also a good entry of 30 feeding bulls, which were keenly sought after to produce an average of 172p per kilo and £59 per /head with highs of: £705 for a 500 kilo Simmental from B. P. H. Llewellyn, Brithdir; £695 for a 445 kilo Limousin, £655 for a 420 kilo British Blue and £645 for a 400 kilo Limousin all from G. E. Morris, Poplars; £645 for a 365 kilo Limousin from C. Swain, Village Farm and £635 for a 420 kilo British Blue form J. A. Wood and Sons.
