AUSTRALIA-GLOBAL CRISIS LEAVES BEEF EXPORTS STRONG ON WEAK DOLLAR.
Demand for Australian beef in the U.S. jumped sharply
on year in January, while exports to Japan also rose in the month, with the
trade bolstered by a weaker Australian currency, industry marketing concern
Meat & Livestock Australia Ltd. reported Friday. Shipments to the U.S. at
15,715 boneless metric tons rose 40% on year, representing the strongest start
to a year since 2003, MLA said in a trade analysis statement. "The recession in
the U.S. has boosted demand for cheaper beef items, especially for
manufacturing beef, which makes up the largest share of Australian beef exports to the U.S."
