From 2012 the CLAAS tractor family is set to be joined by an entirely new range. CLAAS gave a sneak preview of the new AXION 900 at SIMA, the first time the machine has been showcased. With four models from 280 to 400 hp, this new high-performance range of tractors completes the current CLAAS line up and compliments the already popular and proven AXION 800 (180–260-hp) and XERION ranges (330–525-hp).
The first AXION 900 preproduction machines went into operation in early 2010. Since that time, the new tractor has been put through its paces in fields across Europe, in direct consultation with end users. Although the tractor is not yet available commercially, and is currently being given its final finishing touches, CLAAS nonetheless opted to unveil the preproduction model at SIMA.
The design and innovative technology synonymous with CLAAS tractors today is fully incorporated in the AXION 900, which slots perfectly into the CLAAS tractor range.
CPS (CLAAS POWER SYSTEMS)
The AXION 900 embodies an entirely new design concept, encompassing a number of innovative technological advances. For the first time a CLAAS tractor will feature the 24 valve 8.7 litre Cursor 9 engine from FPT, this engine is adapted to meet the requirements in accordance with the very latest emissions control legislation (Tier 4i). In addition and another first, the AXION 900 will feature integrated SCR (selective catalytic reduction) technology.
The new AXION 900 will feature the latest version of the CMATIC Continuously variable transmission. This ZF Eccom unit has great potential for reducing fuel consumption as a result of its four range design.
The AXION 900 will be available in 40-km/h and 50-km/h variants. Rear tyres with a diameter of up to 2.15 metres will be available to allow for up to 400hp to be transferred to the ground effectively. The machine’s front tyres have a diameter of up to 1.7 metres. To further enhance traction and efficiency AXION 900 features a long wheelbase of 3.15 metres and a balanced weight distribution. Its compact overall dimensions however ensure manoeuvrability is not impeeded.
Cab and ergonomics
When it comes to agricultural technology, the current trend for fewer, larger machines to cover greater areas, is placing increasing demands on both man and machine. As a result cab comfort and ergonomics become increasingly important. The AXION 900 features a brand new four-pillar cab, developed in close cooperation with farmers across Europe, taking comfort and functionality to a new level. In developing this new cab CLAAS have also taken inspiration from experts in the automotive industry, setting a new standard in cab design.
New features include optimal all round visibility, achieved by the use of large glazed areas and careful operator seat positioning, and an improved suspension system builds on the already well established CLAAS reputation for comfort.
Control at your fingertips
The new CMOTION control, as already seen on the XERION 5000/4500, has been specially developed for ease of use. The innovative three-finger design allows for the intuitive control of several operating functions without having to adjust your grip. The full-colour, easy-to-operate CEBIS terminal is integrated into the new armrest. The familiar operating principles of CEBIS enable the operator to understand and begin working with the system right away. Direct access to all key functions is guaranteed. Up to 20 headlights including Xenon lights provide for 360-degree lighting, provide an excellent and safe view.
