Biosaf Sc47 achieves full permanent EU registration for dairy cows

Biosaf Sc47 live yeast has gained permanent registration in the EU for feeding to dairy cows. During a meeting of the EU Standing Committee on Food Chain and Animal Health – Animal Nutrition Section held on 26-27 September, EU experts voted to award Biosaf Annex I status, authorising the product for use in diets for dairy cows without a time limit.

Commenting on the decision, Lesaffre Feed Additives area manager, Pascal Termignon said: "In 2003, Biosaf was the first probiotic to be permanently approved for use in ruminant feeding (beef cattle) and was therefore already recognised as being safe and efficacious. It is a result of the efforts of the Lesaffre Feed Additives team, Vistavet, our research partners and customers that has made Biosaf the leading live feed yeast product in the UK and Ireland".

Trials conducted in a number of European research institutes with various production systems have shown that Biosaf can increase milk yield by an average of 1-2 kg per day, resulting from improved feed intake and feed efficiency.

Customers of Vistavet, the distributor of Biosaf in the UK and Ireland, have long enjoyed the benefits of using Biosaf in dairy rations. Dr. Desmond Rice, Vistavet's technical director, and his colleagues have been recommending the product in their customer's rations for some time. Dr. Rice explains the benefits of using this particular live yeast:
