Manitoba cattle headed to Alberta will be discounted unless they have age verification and premises identification.
This comes as a result of the implementation of the Alberta Livestock and Meat Agency’s identification program.
Charlie Gracey explains the agriculture minister in Alberta launched the program after realizing it was necessary for improving cattle exports.
Roughly 20 percent of Manitoba cattle are shipped to Alberta for slaughter.
With Country Of Origin Labelling legislation, that number could rise even higher.
Gracey says some producers are resisting the program however most of them realize its essential for gaining market access.
