Mayor Boris Johnson will meet with Kent farmers to discuss increasing London’s use of food produced in the Home Counties after James Cleverly today raised the matter in Mayor’s Question Time.
"I welcome the Mayor’s commitment to meet with farmers from Kent," Mr Cleverly said.
"At the moment we face the situation where it is sometimes easier to import food from abroad than it is to bring it in from the countryside surrounding London. This is bad for Londoners who get less fresh food on their table, it’s bad for English farmers trying to make a living, and it’s bad for the environment because transporting the food to our stores increases our carbon footprint.
"I look forward to the outcome of the meeting and hope it is the beginning of a new approach to food in London."
Rosie Boycott, Chair of London Food, also welcomed the initiative and congratulated James Cleverly on raising the issue publicly.
