With a £25million investment well underway across the campus, Bishop Burton College, East Yorkshire, has dedicated some of its funds into developing an innovative new pig unit and improvements within the dairy herd. ANGELA CALVERT meets the farm managers helping to equip the students with increased learning opportunities.
THE college's new high-welfare pig unit, awarded Freedom Food accreditation by the RSPCA, is the only one of its kind in the country and is attracting interest from all sectors of the pig industry.
It was recently officially opened by Tim Rymer, chairman of JSR Genetics.
"Pig production is highly relevant in this area," says farm director, Colin Dennis. "We have excellent breeding companies and pig experts, vets and good markets for the pigs."
