Confident beef trade at Bishops Castle auction

Confidence in the beef trade was high at Bishops Castle Auction’s successful sale of store cattle on March 24 with buyers travelling long distances to attend.

Auctioneers Halls reported a good entry of 260 cattle, with steers averaging 178p per kilo and £745 per head. Top price was £1,100 for a pair of 665 kilo Limousin steers from G. Jones and Son, Kempton and 208p per kilo for a pair of 260 kilo Limousins from G. E. Balmer and Son, Snailbeach.

Heifers averaged 155p per kilo and £615 per head to a maximum of £842 for a 585 kilo Limousin from Messrs Edwards and Cooke, Kempton and 203p per kilo for a pair of 385 kilo British Blues from S. H. Hillage of Marshbrook.

A small number of bulls sold to 158p per kilo and £600 per head. Top price of £600 went to two 455 kilo Charolais bulls from W. Hillidge, Shelve.

Limousin per head: £1,100 for two 665 kilo steers from Messrs G. Jones and Son, New House. Per kilo: 208p for two 260 kilo steers from Messrs G. E. Balmer and Son, The Farm. Blonde D’Aquitaine per head: £750 for one 385 kilo steer from Messrs F. J. Owens and Co, Llettygynfach. Per kilo:195p for one 385 kilo steer from Messrs F. J. Owens and Co. British Blue per head: £630 for one 440 kilo steer from Messrs G. H. and C. A. Jones and Son, Bryn Mawr.

Heifers: Black Hereford per head: £720 for one 595 kilo heifer from Messrs A. G. and S. J. Joseph, Cefn Vastre. Charolais per head: £680 for three 470 kilo heifers from M/s G. H. and C. A. Jones, Bryn Mawr. Per kilo: 145p for three 470 kilo heifers from M/s G. H. and C. A. Jones and Son. Limousin per head: £842 for one 585 kilo heifer from Messrs D. Edwards and T. H. Cooke, Lodge Farm. Per kilo: 192p for one390 kilo heifer from Messrs W. D. and M. E. Parry, Caetwp. Blonde D’Aquitaine per head: £500 for four 290 kilo heifers from Messrs G. G. and M. A. Williams, Llwynygog. Per kilo: 188p for two 260 kilo heifers from Messrs G. G. and M. A. Williams. British Blue per head: £780 for two 385 kilo heifers from Messrs S. H. Hillage and Sons, Whittingslow. Per kilo: 203p for two 385 kilo heifers from Messrs S. H. Hillage and Sons.

A prize sale of store cattle is being held at Bishops Castle Auction on Thursday, April 21 with the Barclays Silver Salver at stake. Entries close on Thursday, April 14.

Bishops Castle and District Quality Cattle Association is holding a sale of store cattle on Thursday, May 5 with entries closing to members on Tuesday, April 26.
