These cheap cuts of meat used to be a regular staple in butchers"e; windows but have not been sold in quantity since rationing ended in the 1950s.
Waitrose is reintroducing them from next week partly in an attempt to win over some of its middle-class shoppers that have started to defect the supermarket chain in search of cheaper food.
Its sales growth, which has steamed ahead in recent years, has slowed substantially since the summer as Morrisons, Lidl and Aldi have started to win over more price conscious customers.
