Dairy-beef calf registrations fall for first time

A smaller calf crop could contribute to renewed pressure on beef supplies after a temporary improvement in cattle availability

Dairy-beef calf registrations have fallen for the first time since the adoption of sexed dairy semen, adding to concerns over tight beef supplies into 2027.

Latest British Cattle Movement Service (BCMS) figures, analysed by AHDB, show total GB calf registrations fell by 1.2% year-on-year during the first half of 2026, equivalent to around 17,800 fewer calves.

Combined dairy-beef registrations declined by 0.9% over the same period, ending a long period of expansion in a category which had continued to grow while registrations elsewhere declined.

The figures come as the long-running contraction of the GB suckler herd shows signs of slowing. Female beef cattle aged over 30 months, used by AHDB as a proxy for the national suckler herd, numbered 1.18 million on 1 July.

That was 1.3% lower than a year earlier, but represented the slowest annual rate of decline since 2018.

AHDB said it remains “too early to suggest that herd rebuilding has begun”, although the moderation could indicate producers are changing breeding and retention decisions.

The GB suckler herd has been contracting almost continuously for more than a decade, with profitability among the factors influencing producer decisions.

Short-term beef supplies nevertheless remain tight, with UK prime cattle slaughterings 1.7% lower during the first seven months of 2026. Heavier carcase weights have helped offset some of the impact of reduced throughput.

Numbers of cattle aged between 18 and 36 months have also declined, with the exception of heifers aged 18 to 24 months.

As these older cattle make up much of the pool available for slaughter during the remainder of the year, AHDB said the figures point towards continued tight supply in the near term.

Slaughter numbers increased heading into the third quarter, which AHDB said could partly reflect tight forage availability across many parts of the country.

The outlook further ahead is more mixed, with cattle numbers in the six to 18-month age group increasing following breeding decisions made in late 2024 and early 2025 as cattle prices strengthened.

Prices went on to exceed 700p/kg in May 2025 before retreating. AHDB suggested the strong market may have encouraged producers to retain cows and maximise calf output.

Those cattle could provide a temporary increase in slaughter availability as they move through the system.

However, the number of calves under six months has fallen following the 2026 spring calving season, raising the prospect of another tightening in supply afterwards.

AHDB said breeding decisions affecting those younger animals were made after cattle prices had fallen back from their May 2025 record highs.

Changes within the dairy sector are also influencing the future beef supply picture. Milk prices eased during autumn 2025 after a prolonged period of stronger returns, while high cull values contributed to increased dairy cow culling.

AHDB said this reduced breeding numbers going into the spring and subsequently affected calf output.

Dairy-beef heifer registrations fell by 1.7% during the first half of 2026, while dairy-beef bull calf registrations were down by 0.2%.

Dairy heifer registrations also fell by 1.5%, while suckler-born beef calf registrations declined by 1% over the six-month period.

AHDB said questions remain over whether the first fall in dairy-beef registrations could signal that growth in dairy-beef systems is beginning to reach a limit.

The organisation said the changing cattle age profile demonstrates how decisions made on farms can take months or years to feed through into national beef production.

Overall, supplies are expected to remain tight through the end of 2026 and into early 2027. A larger group of cattle currently aged six to 18 months could provide some temporary relief, but the smaller calf crop behind them raises the prospect of renewed pressure further ahead.

AHDB also identified disease as a risk to future fertility and breeding decisions, with bluetongue among the concerns heading into next year.
