Davies Family wins Texel Butcher's Lamb competition in Shrewsbury
Shropshire and Border Texel Club’s butcher’s lamb competition at Shrewsbury Auction Centre on Tuesday attracted an entry of more than 200 sheep.
The champion pen of eight or more Texel sired lambs was owned by Graham and Cath Davies, Frodesley with 43 kilo lambs which sold for £109 a head to Tom Bellis, Fairfield Meat, Marchwiel. The lambs also won the 38.5 kilos and above class.
Winner of the up to 38 kilos class was Jamie Ratcliffe, Church Preen, with 35.5 kilo lambs which sold for £77 a head to Tim Skyrme representing Pak Mecca Meat, Birmingham.
There were also two classes for Young Farmers’ Club members, with the heavyweight and champion awards going to Christopher Potter, Frodesley from Dorrington YFC with 42 kilo lambs which sold for £103 a head to John Bithell representing Farmers Fresh Ltd, Kennilworth.
The other class was won by Harry Thomas, Treflach, Oswestry, with 32 kilo lambs, which sold for £73.50 a head to Pak Mecca Meat.
Auctioneers Nick Hyne, manager of Shrewsbury Auction Centre, said: "It was very pleasing to see so many entries from young farmers and also lambs sired by rams purchased at the annual pedigree Texel ram sale, which this year will be held on September 3 in Shrewsbury."
