EU backs UK bird flu, foot-and-mouth measures

BRUSSELS (Thomson Financial) - EU member states backed the UK's control measures in response to two outbreaks of bird flu on the border between Norfolk and Suffolk in eastern England.

Equally, they endorsed a European Commission proposal to ease the foot-and-mouth restrictions in place in the UK.

The UK authorities told the commission yesterday of the second outbreak of potentially lethal bird flu, situated within the protection zone set up after last week's outbreak.
