A WEST Cumbria farmer today told of his shock and sadness after a prize bullock ran amok and was shot dead in Ulverston town centre.
Brian Drinkall, of Nether Wasdale, was knocked over and bruised when the 90-stone animal made its bid for freedom.
Efforts to calm it down failed and police, worried about the safety of the public, decided on drastic action and an armed slaughterhouse worker took the animal down.
Mr Drinkall, 60, of Stangend Farm, was on his way to the weekly sheep and auction mart in Ulverston when the bullock stampeded.
He said: "I couldn't do anything to stop the animal. It knocked me to the ground and I've still got the bruising.
"This has never happened to me before but I suppose there's always a first time.
