Farmers to be consulted on Chernobyl restrictions

NFU Cymru is inviting farmers within the Chernobyl-restricted area of north-west Wales to an open meeting to have their say on a regulatory agency’s consultation that could see an end to 25 years of controls.

The move follows the Food Standards Agency’s recent decision to look again at controls on sheep farms affected by Chernobyl radiation fall-out.

Hefin Davies, in charge of Radiological Safety at Food Standards Agency Wales, has agreed to present the facts to farmers at the meeting, which will be held at the Pengwern Arms Hotel, Llan Ffestiniog, Gwynedd, between 1pm and 3pm on Thursday 19 January 2012.

Mr Eifion Davies, NFU Cymru Meirionnydd County Chairman said, "All farmers within the restricted area are invited to attend. The views expressed at the meeting will help NFU Cymru formulate a response to the consultation. We encourage you to attend."
