The NFU is calling for landlords and banks to support the tenanted sector with many farmers reporting difficulties with rent payments as a result of reduced livestock trade during the on-going foot and mouth outbreak.
Traditionally rents are due at Michaelmas, September 29, and the NFU is advising farmers to have talks with their landlord as part of their forward planning and set out when the payments will be made.
National tenants' spokesman for the NFU Peter Crozier urged tenants to act now rather than spring a surprise on their landlord at the end of the month. He said: "Communication is key during this difficult time, if the rent is going to be tight because livestock have not been sold as a result of market closures, talk to your bank manager and landlord as soon as possible and explain the situation to them. Don't wait for them to phone or write to you before taking action."
NFU Deputy President Meurig Raymond added: "The last thing any of us need at the present time is to deal with potential notices to quit when our business has been disrupted all summer long. If you are unsure of what to do NFU members should make Callfirst their first point of contact."
