Tri-Central Co-op at Ashkum had 650,000 bushels of corn stored outside last week -- more than twice as much as the 300,000 last year.
The local crops are just too large for the firm's 3.8 million bushels of bin capacity and the crop comes in too fast for marketing to keep bin space open, manager Dave Pratt said.
The situation is similar throughout Illinois, where temporary outdoor storage of corn has become routine in recent years.
