AS millions of people fired up the barbie during the heatwave, meat sales took off according to figures released by the Meat and Livestock Commission. The biggest winner was the beefburger where over the four weeks to August 17, sales rose by almost 25 per cent. Over the same period the sales of steaks, lamb chops and steaks, sausages and pork steaks and chops also recorded significant rises either in terms of volume or value. MLC Consumer Marketing Manager, Chris Lamb, said: "This just goes to prove when the sun comes out, the barbies come out and people turn to British meat. "This is what everybody was saying during the heatwave and now we have the proof of the pudding in these latest figures. "Barbecues are becoming ever more popular during the hot weather and sausages and steaks are the nation's favourites."
