Illinois illnesses prompted local beef recall

American Foods Group learned Friday there might be a problem with nearly 96,000 pounds of ground beef produced locally on Oct. 10.

On Saturday, the company issued a voluntary recall of the meat.

Susan Finco, whose public relations firm represents American Foods, said the reporting process goes from local government to state government to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which notifies the companies involved. If a link is suspected, she said, the company issues a voluntary recall.

American Foods Group took Saturday's action as a "precautionary measure," she said.
