Livestock ID companies set the record straight on EID

A spokesperson for the livestock identification trade body, ALIDMA (Association of Livestock Identification Manufacturers), which represents more than 90% of the livestock identification industry, has expressed grave concern regarding cost estimates for EID sheep tags that have appeared in the farming press.

ALIDMA spokesperson, (Mrs) Lesley Lewin, said:

"Sheep farmers are being led to believe that EID tags will cost about 50p more than current tags. The true position is that there will be wide variations in the price of EID tags, reflecting the different features and benefits of the various tags available. It is not just about price, farmers should choose the tags that best meet their needs.

"Sheep farmers have also been told that virtually all current sheep tags will be available in EID versions, and that different applicators are unlikely to be required. This is not correct. Due to the very high development and approval cost of EID tags, some visual tags will not be available in EID versions. Many EID tags will differ from current tag designs, requiring new applicators. We suggest that farmers seek the advice of their tag supplier.

"Our members are working hard to develop and gain approval for EID tags; our organisation exists to work with government bodies and the farming industry to deliver products that meet the needs of livestock farmers."
