Figures from the HSE have revealed that in 2016/17 agriculture had the highest rate of fatal injury
A man has died following an accident involving a tractor and trailer on a farm in Pembrokeshire.
Police are investigating after emergency services were called to Lancych in Boncath at 10:20am on Tuesday (21 November).
The 61-year-old man was injured after the accident. He was then taken to hospital where he later died.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has been informed and the man's family is being supported by a police officer.
The tragic news follows the creation of a a new partnership between the National Farmers' Union and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to improve health and safety within the farming sector.
NFU Vice President and Farm Safety Partnership Chair Guy Smith said: âBy far the most difficult part of my job as NFU Vice President is when the HSE notifies me of fatalities or injuries on farms.
âIt is particularly disheartening that most of these accidents involve similar and reoccurring circumstances such as working in enclosed spaces with animals or on live machinery."
Figures from the HSE have revealed that in 2016/17 agriculture had the highest rate of fatal injury, around 18 times higher than the All Industry rate.
The main causes of death were âstruck by vehiclesâ (30 per cent), âtrapped by something collapsingâ (20 per cent), âstruck by an objectâ (17 per cent), âcontact with electricityâ (10 per cent), âfalling from a heightâ (7 per cent), and âinjured by an animalâ (7 per cent).
