Mostyn gallery receives a RIBA Award 2011
The Mostyn gallery, Llandudno will be presented with its prestigious RIBA award on Thursday 07 July, at 6.00pm, at a ceremony on site.
Guests will attend the presentation to see Tony Chapman, Head of Awards at the RIBA present the prestigious RIBA Award to the award-winning architect Dominic Williams (Ellis Williams Architects) and Martin Barlow (Mostyn) and contractor (R L Davies).
Mostyn is one of seven buildings from Wales to be awarded with an internationally recognized RIBA award in 2011.
The extended and refurbished gallery has more than doubled the size of the original, having incorporated a former retail area at street level, which has increased visibility for the new gallery space.
Ellis Williams Architects have cleverly arranged three new gallery spaces; one double-height features a series of angled rooflights, and the quality of light playing on the walls both softens and draws out the texture of the shuttering.
This is a confident and refreshing addition to the art scene of Wales that complements the art it houses.
Jonathan Speirs, Jury Chair for RIBA Awards in 2011 in Wales, said:
’This project is a delightful gem. A confident piece of design that surprises first time visitors in a quite unexpectedly way, yet doesn’t overwhelm the art. The dramatic increase in the visitor numbers since the refurbishment demonstrates not only its local appeal but also its appeal to tourists. A refreshingly new addition to the art scene of Wales.’
