Family business with ’service’ its core philosophy

Building a business fit for a new generation is the aim of a new venture in South Wales that sees an agricultural engineering business return to the new tractor market.

Lanes Agricultural is the farm machinery business of Lanes Garage based at Llanvetherine near Abergavenny, Gwent, and the newly-appointed sales and service dealer for Landini farm tractors.

"We were first approached a couple of years ago but at the time the business was being restructured to encourage a new generation of the family to become involved," explains Vernon Lane. "With that process completed, we decided after looking at several different tractor makes that Landini provided the best range for farmers in our area."

The business is a real family affair, with sales and finance handled by Vernon Lane’s nephew Chris Phelps and accounts by his daughter Gemma.

Mr Lane works alongside his son Will In the service department while also overseeing the parts side of the business – and they both take turns being on-call for the vehicle and specialist machinery recovery service operated under the Lanes Garage name.

"We’re very much geared to delivering good customer service across all aspects of the business, including the agricultural side," Vernon Lane emphasises. "With 18 years previous experience as a tractor dealer, we know what’s expected of us and with extensive workshop facilities that can easily accommodate up to six tractors at a time, we hope to attract regular work from existing and new Landini tractor users."

Lanes Agricultural represents Landini in an area east of the Brecon Beacons and Hay-on-Wye through to Chepstow. The territory neighbours existing dealers John Griffiths near Cardiff to the south, Ledbury-based Richard Tooby Farm Services to the north-east and Aeron Valley Tractors at Lampeter to the north-west.

With a product range that extends from 28hp to 225hp, Mr Lane reckons the Landini tractor line-up is well-suited to the area.

"If you want a straight-forward mechanical tractor, then the four-cylinder Powerfarm and six-cylinder Landpower models fit the bill nicely," says Mr Lane. "But there are higher-spec versions of these models with added features – and if something altogether more powerful and sophisticated is needed, the PowerMax and PowerMaster have all the features you’d expect on a modern high-performance tractor."

Together with the 40-series and Mistral compacts, Rex and Alpine specialist fruit and high-stability tractors and the new PowerMondial range, the Landini line-up should have something to suit the sheep and dairy units in the area, as well as the big arable farms.

"I think it’s a good range that will help re-establish our position in agricultural engineering and develop a business for the younger generation of our family," says Vernon Lane. "I’m very excited by the new venture and our new partnership with Landini."
