NFU Cymru welcomes non introduction of national envelope

NFU Cymru has welcomed today’s announcement by the Rural Affairs Minister that the Welsh Assembly Government will not be introducing a National Envelope scheme for farming in Wales.

Dai Davies, NFU Cymru President said, "NFU Cymru has consistently opposed the establishment of National Envelopes in Wales. The provision of a National Envelope would run counter to the principle of decoupling support from production and would have amounted merely to the redistribution of resources within the industry."

Today’s announcement comes as a result of an extensive consultation carried out by the Welsh Government on the potential future use of a National Envelope.

NFU Cymru, in its response to the consultation, completely opposed the creation of a National Envelope in Wales and urged the Rural Affairs Minister to resist their establishment as it had the potential to act as modulation via the backdoor and would have been inconsistent with the principle of decoupling.
