NSW drought stats good news for farmers
The unusually wet weather at the start of the year may have put a dampener on the summer holidays, but it has taken huge areas of the state out of drought, NSW government figures show.
The proportion of the state considered to be satisfactory has jumped from 32.9 per cent to 43.7 per cent in the past month, NSW Primary Industries Minister Ian Macdonald announced.
The area still drought-declared is now only 40.3 per cent, down from 46.1 per cent a month ago, and the marginal area has dropped from 21 per cent to 16 per cent.
Mr Macdonald said the figures were good news for farmers and good news for households across the state.
"This trend is built on a very large amount of rainfall over the period of summer in which we had above-average rainfall in most parts of the state," he told reporters.
"The forecasts are still indicating that we should have a wet autumn and a wet winter, and if this comes to pass, it will lead to larger crops and a greater income for our farming sector.
