NT to help Vietnam beef industry be self-sufficient

The Primary Industries Minister says a new short term Asian trade route for Northern Territory cattle could potentially open within years.

Minister Chris Natt and a delegation of Top End cattlemen and exporters are visiting the southern Vietnamese port city of Nha Trang this week.

Minister Natt says Vietnam is keen to cease importing beef within twelve years, but requires more cattle to boost herd numbers.

"The Vietnamese want to build their their cattle industry up, their beef industry up and they want to be self sustainable by 2020. They understand that the people on the ground within Vietnam haven't got the expertise to do what is required to do that so they are looking towards Australia for some assistance."
